Assigning and Resetting Usernames and Passwords (written)

As a departmental administrator, you have the ability to assign Sinai Central usernames and passwords to the people in your department. Whether you are resetting an existing user's username or password, you will use similar procedures. These directions cover both situations.

Sometimes a user may ask you to look up his or her password. You cannot look up a user's existing password.  You can, however, reset their password. At the time you reset a user's password, you can either have the system email the new password to the user, or display the password onscreen.  The entire process should take less than a minute per user.

Resetting a Password

Find and Select the User

  1. From your Sinai Central home page, select the Finance menu.
  2. From the Finance sub-menu, select Dept Admin.
  3. Select User Admin.
  4. Search for the user in question.  When you find them, select their name.

  5. Select Login Account.

  6. If this is a new user, who does not know his/her user name and password, take note of the user's user name. For a new user, this should be the person's life number. Via email or telephone, tell the user their current user name. You can do this right away, or after you've completed the rest of this procedure.
  7. Select Reset Password.
  8. The reset password screen enables you to either have the system email the new password to the user, or, display the new password on screen. This is controlled by a pull-down menu. An example is shown below.

    1. If the pull-down menu is left blank, the system will display the new password on screen. You can then use telephone or your email to give the new password to the user.

    On Displaying Passwords

Doing this puts you in a position of confidence with the system. It is against IT Policy regarding security with systems to share user name and passwords with people other than the actual user. NEVER write down this password or exchange it in an email with other credentials (the user name).

    1. If the user has an email address in Sinai Central, it will appear in the pull-down menu. You can select this email address and the system will send the new password to that email address.
    2. If you want the system to send the new password to an email address which is not listed in the pull-down menu, select *add new email*. You will then be given a popup dialog box, into which you enter the email address.

  9. After choosing whether to display the password on screen or email it, select Yes, Reset Password.
  10. Once again, you will be prompted to confirm that you want to reset the password. Select OK.
The password is reset. If you chose to display it on screen, you will see the password on screen. If you chose to have the system email it to the user, you will see a confirmation that the system sent the email.
